How do I care for my black molly fry?

16 November 2008 Comments

My black molly had 19 fry yesterday. I got them into a fry net seperated from the other fish. I have tried to feed them both crushed flake food as well as some frozen brine shrimp but they don’t seem interested. What should I do?

they will eat the flake food when they are hungry

They will pick away at the food. Keep in mind how tiny they are. They only need a tiny crumb of food each. You can purchase liquid fry food but it is made up mostly of smashed egg yolk and dirties up the water pretty quickly.

At a day old they won’t be eating yet. What I would recommend is baby brine shrimp, a lot of fry won’t eat anything but that.

Pet stores sell fry food that is very small, almost like sand, they will definitely eat this once they about 2 days old. You could also try egg yolk, although it makes the tank very dirty and you would need to do frequent water canges.

You would cook the egg yolk, then mix about a teaspoon of water with it, dip your finger in and then touch it to the water in the fry net.

I have about 80 guppy fry right now and I feed them yolk the first 2 days, then fry food.

They won’t eat until after they finish absorbing their ‘yolk sack’, it is trhe bit of food that they are born with to help get them started and make them strong, it may be 48 hours before they eat.
A tiny bit of cooked egg yolk, mixed with a few drops of fish tank water, mash is good an put just a drop in to see if they will eat.
The crushed flake food should also work, baby mollies are really quite lage for fry, wait til you see a freshly hatched betta fry!!!

Fish that lack interest in food has a problem. There is something wrong. Try and change about 50% of the water everyday, and feed them infusoria. The brine shrimp might be too big for them to consume fully so you might need to get a different frozen food. Also, the food might be too cold for them if you don’t defrost it.
