How do you tell if a black molly is a male or female?

16 November 2008 Comments

Long story. Look at my last question. But the thing that really ticks me off if Lilo is a boy is that the lady at pet smart told me that they were BOTH girls. I don’t have room for another tank really. I can’t have them have 27 million babies together!!! Geez and I would have to re name Lilo!!! Geez. I am really furious right now.
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH! Lilo is a dude!!!!

I guess HIS name is Stitch now.

The one that pops out babies is a female
and the one that nips at the female’s buttox is the male.

With livebearing fish of that type, it’s fairly easy to determine their sex. Look at the fin on their underside - if it is triangular shaped, the fish is female. If it is a long, thin fin, then it is male. The same applies to platys.

Well you don’t have to worry about babies too much because mollies don’t live long generally unless you are very very careful with the water. Plus they like to eat their young. Ick. Anyway, the males are smaller with a leaner body and a more angled look to their tail fin. The females are about fifty percent larger than the male and more ‘thick’ looking with a less refined tail.

Well, the male is slightly smaller and has a little fin that moves back and forth right around his anus area on the belly side. Someone working at PetSmart should know. Fortunately or unfortunately, if you don’t have any plants in your aquarium the babies will be eaten. At least that’s my experience.
