Pregnant Platy or what?

1 November 2009 Comments

I have had my Blue Spot Platy in the breeding net for over 4 weeks. She’s huge, but no signs of labor or babies. She has a big black spot near her butt. She won’t eat. She has been in the net so long that I am second guessing her pregnancy. How long are Platys’ Pregnant? When is she going to have babies?

Let her out of the net - those things are death traps and chances are she’s so stressed out in there she’s refusing to pop out the fry - they can cause serious problems including aborting fry or even causing the mother to keel over from stress.

Livebearers like Platys usually have a gestation of around 28 days.

Let her out, put some dense plants in the tank like java moss for any potential fry to hide in and let her settle back down.

If in a few weeks there’s still no sign of fry it could be another disorder causing bloating.

I agree totally with the above!

I think that simply putting her in the breeding net could be having detrimental effects on her health - she may abort the babies or even have a miscarriage.

Put her back into the main tank and allow her to regain her health and give birth there. The stupid or deformed babies will get eaten but the cleverer, healthier and fitter ones will find hiding places behind filters, in the gravel, in plants, stones, rocks, decorations, etc.

I never put any of my livebearer females in separate breeder nets or tanks - it only stresses them out!

    Good luck!
