Would my Chinese Algae Eater kill my female bettas?

16 November 2008 Comments

The three of them were happy and getting along when I put them in my 20 gallon a few days ago but this morning two were dead and one was seriously injured hovered in the corner. The Chinese Algae Eater seemed to be aggressive at first towards the male betta I had in the tank for a while, but then he stopped. I took the male out about a week before I put the females in.
Yeah I took out my remaining blue female and put her in a "hospital tank." She’s all torn up though.

She keeps going to the surface for air and stuff so that maybe a good sign.
I got him from wal mart like a year ago. That’s why I was so surprised that he would kill them.

bettas are instinctivly fighting fish any sense of aggression especially at night they will react accordingly. so yes it is possible. in fact im sure thats what happened unless you didnt aclimate them properly.

Chinese algae eaters are known to kill Bettas. Separate them as soon as possible to stop any more losses.

Chinese algae eaters are notoriously aggressive as they age and grow in size. As visually appealing as they can be, I don’t keep them in any of my tanks because I just don’t trust them.

If I were you, I’d get rid of the CAEs. Call the store where you bought them and ask if you can return them or exchange them for otocinclus catfish. Otos would be a much better tankmate for your bettas. They don’t grow large, they’re not boisterous, and they’re not aggressive.
