Does anyone know about Columbian Sharks?

29 October 2009 Comments

The 100 gallon tank he lives in has been up and running for more than 5 years. I’m experienced with keeping aquariums and know about water changes, chemistry, etc., and have maintained the tank properly. There are 4 angel fish, 5 rainbow fish, 9 assorted tetras, and a pleco in there with him.

About 3 weeks ago I noticed he spends less time hiding. Usually, I never see him, but lately he’s been hanging very still right in the middle of the tank.

Yesterday, he almost knocked the tank’s hood off when he thrashed to the surface and completely out of the water. I thought he’d killed himself because he sank to the bottom of the tank and layed on his back for the longest time. Then he curled in a circle and thrashed more.

It really looked like a seizure. It lasted, on and off for about 5 minutes. He swam upside down for another 5 minutes, then seemed to go back to normal.

I haven’t seen him eat anything, but he seems calm now.

Any ideas would be great.

I have had much experience with these fish also known as silver-tipped sharks and my suggestion to you and I know this probably sucks but them with angels, rainbows, tetras, and a pleco do not mix at all first of all for these fish to be completely happy this is how it should be the shark likes to school with it’s own kind (I had three and they schooled like crazy, moving all the time) their also major brackish water fish (they can take freshwater because it’s also in their natural habitat but the majority of their lifetime needs to be in brackish water) same thing with the rainbows… so Colombians with rainbows in one tank, the angels, tetras, and pleco in another… I know that’s a big tank, and it might sound good to put a lot of different types of fish together, but you want your for fish to be completely happy so yeah….
I don’t mean to sound rude I’m just really tired… sorry!
oh and it’s not normal for the Colombian shark to stay in one place, they should mainly be always moving…

Colombian Sharks are brackish water fish as they grow, you should expect him not to be happy with the water quality and for being separated from his kind.
